It’s said if you say “White Rabbits” three times on the first day of the month you’ll receive luck for rest of that month. Now with White Rabbit, the latest slot from Big Time Gaming, your luck might be in! Inspired by the Lewis Carroll ‘Alice’ stories, this Megaways slot is one of the biggest releases of the season. Time to head through the looking glass. . .

White Rabbit is 5 reel slot with a potential 16807 winning combinations during the base game. This gets super-sized up to a staggering 248832 Megaways in the free spins bonus round. You can play from just 10p up to £20 per spin. What’s particularly unusual about the slot is you’re able to actually buy the main bonus feature. I’ll come back to that shortly.

While the slot has an excellent theoretical RTP of 97.72%, the flip-side is high variance. So things could get pretty volatile.

The slot features many of Lewis Carroll’s famous characters as the lower paying symbols. You’ll find the grinning Cheshire Cat, Tweedledum and Tweedledee and the Mad Hatter all attached to playing card symbols. These run from 9 up to A.

While most of the higher paying symbols are gem based. By far the biggest is the Red Queen which pays 25x your stake for 5 in a row.

The remaining symbols are the White Rabbit scatter which appears on reels 2, 3 and 4. Plus, Alice’s looking glass wild, which can substitute for any paying symbol. It can appear on all reels bar the first.

Feature-wise, in the base game you have the Caterpillar Wilds. Our larval friend stays asleep on his toadstool most of the time. However, when the feature randomly triggers, he’ll wake up from his forty winks and start puffing away on his hookah. Well either that or he’s got a serious vaping habit!

He starts blowing smoke rings onto the reels. These then transform into multiplier wilds, with up 3x multiplier per wild. He can create four of these bonus wilds, so landing them could lead to a big base game win.

To trigger the free spins bonus, you need three White Rabbit scatters across the middle reels during the base game. But if you don’t fancy waiting, you have the opportunity to buy the bonus via Feature Drop. This big bet option starts out at 100 times your stake. So if you’re playing £1.00 a spin, it’ll cost you £100 to buy.

This amount can decrease though, thanks to the Feature Drop gold coin symbols. These can appear at any time during the base game. Once the shown amount reaches zero the bonus round will be triggered immediately. Sounds a great idea that rewards your play.

Obviously buying the bonus is not going to be for the faint-hearted. This is a very high-risk bet! The slot presents a warning before choosing this option. So you don’t have to worry about accidentally pressing the Buy button!

Once you’ve either bought or triggered the bonus, you are awarded 15 free spins.

Play now moves onto a new set of 5 reels, each starting with a minimum of 6 symbols.

The key to the free spins is growing the expanding reels by landing little ‘Eat Me’ cupcakes. Every cupcake expands a reel by one symbol.

If you manage to expand a reel up to the maximum 12 symbols, then that reel becomes a Queen’s reel.

Once created, the reel now features more Red Queen and wild symbols. Even better, the White Rabbit also awards more free spins. The minute hand on his pocket watch whizzes round and wherever it lands is the number of extra spins awarded.

If you’re lucky enough to get a full 5 Queen’s reels, you’ve reached the maximum amount of symbols and free spins you can receive.

How does it look and play?

In addition to its Lewis Carroll inspiration, White Rabbit takes some of its design cues from Big Time Gaming’s first Megaways slot Dragon Born.

Set in the leafy woods, the symbols and backgrounds are attractively draw. It has a distinctly storybook book feel to it and staying quite true to the fairytales. While ‘Alice In Wonderland’ themed slots aren’t exactly new, White Rabbit perfectly captures the quirkiness of those original tales.

Everything is, as usual with Big Time Gaming, well animated and the slot plays super smooth and snappy.

The slot begins with beautifully relaxing background music. There are strings and harps, birds twittering, a church bell tolling, and the white rabbit’s watch ticking. As you start to play, things change up a gear, mixing marching sounds and some Eastern beats.

As the reels spin, you’ll notice the sound effects are pretty similar to Dragon Born. A tad disappointing. It would have been better to have something unique to the slot considering all the other work which has gone into the production. However, the quality across the board can’t be faulted.

Like Dragon Born, big wins are preceded by the reels slowing down and dramatic music building up. All this nicely ramps up the anticipation of nice payout.

I feel the Caterpillar Wilds is a slightly lacklustre feature. It has the potential to be exciting but quite often it can be a bit of a damp squib. Adding a further feature to the base game would have been good too.

Undoubtedly, the free spins bonus feature is the absolute jewel here. The ability to simply buy it at any time is a massive value-add for those who love a bit of high-rolling big bet action. Equally, those who prefer to let chance take its course or work towards it with Feature Drop will definitely enjoy the bonus once it comes.

Those huge expanding reels and the mind-boggling Megaways possibilities mean there’s tremendous potential for huge free spins bonus wins.

You’ll definitely want to hit those cupcakes as soon as possible though. It’s essential to expand those reels to be able to hit the bigger bonus wins.

The lowdown

Big Time Gaming has landed another winner here with White Rabbit. As developers, they have an uncanny knack of combining various elements to produce great slots. Its design fits perfectly with the classic fairytale theme. And all importantly, it plays really well!

The ability to purchase the free spins feature is comparatively rare. It will definitely be appreciated by those who are happy to take a bigger risk for the bigger potential reward.

White Rabbit provides both great entertainment and value for all slot players. A high RTP combined with high variance could be a bit of rollercoaster!

The only downsides are the lack of some original sounds and a middling base game feature. They’re pretty minor quibbles in all honesty.

White Rabbit comes highly recommended and available at all casinos featuring Big Time Gaming slots. I particularly recommend Videoslots and Mr Green. Both are trusted casinos here in the UK.
